GEC 1st ANNUAL MEETING
27-29 MAY 2024
2024 Q2
Our Vision
To position Singapore as Asia's Green Hub.
Learn about our cohesive approach which contributes to all three sectors of the macroeconomy

Green Policies
The Key: Active role of the government to push forward initiatives to encourage participation from the business and labour sectors in the economy, promoting sustainable and environmentally-friendly growth, with the ultimate aim to support climate change mitigation.
The Gap: Information disconnect between the macro policies and micro markets pose (often overlooked) industry-specific challenges for the business sector, discouraging (particularly) SMEs from embarking on sustainable business models.
Closing The Gap: GEC serves as the “bridge” to overcome information disconnect, by providing valuable (context-specific) data and insights to policymakers, which will, in turn, enable the effective finetuning of policy initiatives to boost the participation of the business and labour sectors in the economy.

The Key: The active participation of the domestic workforce to pursue upskilling in the array of green competencies, providing a well-needed boost to the labour supply of green talents in Singapore. This will also help to address structural unemployment.
The Gap: Notwithstanding skills upgrading grants, asymmetric information in the green employment sector has discouraged PMETs to pursue courses in green skills amidst uncertainty about the career opportunities in the sustainable space, especially considering the lukewarm receptiveness of SMEs (which contribute majority labour demand) on sustainable business development.
Closing The Gap: GEC serves as a ‘facilitator’ to address the risk of asymmetric information in the green employment sector, by providing reliable information on the in-demand green skills, and connecting members to green career opportunities.

The Key: The active participation of the business sector (in particular, SMEs) to pursue and embark on sustainable business development models, optimizing resource efficiency through the production and consumption process, reducing waste and emission. Notably, a sustainable business model will promote competitiveness amidst tightening environmental policies at the global level.
The Gap: SMEs lack the knowhow to transit into a sustainable development model in their respective industry context, with cost, inconvenience and unfamiliarity factors to further weigh on the move.
Closing The Gap: GEC serves as the “educator” to communicate green success strategies to SMEs, connect green talents to manage the knowhow, and refer relevant authorities to soften cost considerations

Solar PV Capacity Running Up Fast
Considering the unique geographical aspects of Singapore, solar PV technology would be the only feasible alternative source of renewable energy production. As of end 2023, the total installed solar PV capacity in Singapore has touched as high as 773.9MW (and fast approaching the 1GW mark), in stark contrast to a mere 0.3MW in 2008, printing a remarkable growth of 59.1% y/y over the last 10 years. The accelerated pace of solar PV expansion can be mainly attributed to the double whammy of tightening environmental policies coupled with rising geopolitical tensions at the global level. And EMA's effort to promote effective competition in the energy market has also encouraged renewable energy diversification among Autoproducers. That said, the contribution of solar PV to total electricity generation capacity remained at a low of 6% by end 2023, suggesting scope for accommodative energy policy to promote diversification.
Data and statistical analysis in Singapore and its Asian peers contributes to knowledge generation in GEC, helping strengthen its value-added to the green community in Singapore.
